The consideration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters in investment decision making and post-investment engagement has many names. References to responsible investment, impact investing, ESG engagement, stewardship, socially responsible investment (SRI) and sustainability investment will imply different activities for different parties.
And, confusingly, sometimes the same term is used to mean different things by different commentators. However, the common thread is that, in addition to financial or economic performance, the way in which companies manage the ESG aspects of their business is vital to the investor.
